Every year for the past 4 years, we’ve been invited to participate in the Puma PT3 Tournament by our good friend Khairi, unfortunately with little success. This year we actually practiced, and didn’t do that bad! With a bit more time on the tables, the trophy is ours next year!

Beat Breakers is an after school program that we started at the Bronx Academy of Letters in April, with support from Puma. We’re happy to announce that the first group of kids in the Beat Breakers just gave their final performance in front of the entire school, and they really killed it! All the hard effort and training led by Ken Swift and Waak (Breaks Kru) really paid off, as you could tell by watching the routine that they choreographed themselves. We’re just so proud of these guys. We’re pretty sure they’re the coolest kids in their school right now. Just wait till the next round of Beat Breakers hits the stage!
Check out the full coverage with pics taken by hiphop historian and Bronx native, Joe Conzo, on the Beat Breakers blog.
The esteemed professor Ken Swift led the first class of the Beat Breakers on 4/20, and it was off the hook! Some of these kids can really dance, and are hungry to learn more. Our producer buddy Chris was on set shooting footage, and will be putting together a promo spot very soon.
We just launched a new after-school b-boy / b-girl program for high school kids called BEAT BREAKERS, which will be taught by none other than the legendary Ken Swift. The pilot program runs for seven weeks starting on April 20th and debuts at the Bronx Academy of Letters, a really progressive high school that emphasizes good writing skills as a path to success.
To kick off the program and give students a taste of what they might eventually be able to do, Ken brought some of the Breaks Kru (WaAak, Nemesis, and MykeToes) to perform a brief exhibition in front of students who were interested in learning more about the program. Much more in updates and news on this program to come… Peep the vid and slideshow for now:
The Cool Kids?
In Korea?
Really?
Bout Gahtdamn time!
Catharsis NYC is proud to have facilitated the booking for The Cool Kids to make their debut in the Land of the Morning Calm, my people’s land: S. Korea!
Joining The Cool Kids in the lineup are Theophilus London (Go BROOKLYN!), Cro-Magnon, Jazztronik, Ribbon Society, Triple House and our homies at 360 Sounds – this is lookin like one helluva party.
Catharsis was down in Austin, Texas this past weekend to produce the second annual Lawyer4Musicians Showcase during the music festival portion of SXSW. The talented lineup included a diverse blend of both up-and-coming and well-established indie bands and hiphop emcees. This year’s showcase was held at Aces Lounge right on the main strip on 6th St. Red Stripe dropped off some beer (thanks Cornerstone!) which evaporated in a matter of moments, as the venue became packed to capacity with well over 800 people during the course of the show.
Cool Calm Pete hosted the afternoon’s festivities and even dropped an acapella verse to the crowd clapping along. Opening act You, You’re Awesome surprised attendees with their funky 8bit-infused sound. French Horn Rebellion entertained the crowd with their electro set and on-stage shenanigans. Hey Champ rocked the stage with their smooth synth and guitar sound. Bad Rabbits lit up the stage with their hi-energy, funk-punk performance. Kidz in the Hall kicked off the hiphop portion of the show with a strong set. The Cool Kids threw an amazing performance that made the crowd go buckwild thanks to Aces’ banging bass-heavy sound system. Highlights included special surprise performances by Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes during 88-Keys‘ set and an impromptu Dilated Peoples performance (minus DJ Babu) with Evidence and The Alchemist for Rakaa’s set. Check out the slideshow below, and keep posted for some exclusive video footage.
All in all, we can most definitely say that we rocked Austin, and can’t wait to do it again next year!
